Member Blog: Quality Buds. Quality Source. What’s better, seeds or clones?

You will receive ten different responses if you ask 10 cannabis growers what the best method is to produce quality cannabis. Every cultivator believes they have the perfect recipe for premium buds. The debate is raging over whether it’s better to use clones or seeds. Both have pros and cons.

Some people prefer to grow plants from seeds because they believe that seeds produce a more robust plant. Clones, on the other hand, are a carbon-copy of the original. They look the same but lack the vibrancy. Imagine the old copy machines. After a few copies the ink would become lighter and the background more blurry. Cloned plants are said to provide the same results. Breeding is another benefit of growing from seeds. All cuttings from clone mother plants are female. To cross two cultivars successfully, some males must be included. The assured female offspring from the mother plant can reduce waste, time and the risk of a male pollinating the garden. Growing from clones is also beneficial because, as a carbon-copy of the mother plant, the grower can reproduce desired strains. While you can purchase seeds of a prize-winning variety to grow, it is possible that the final product, just like its siblings, will be different.

Clones are a good option for home growers because seedlings are very fragile. When I started, I tried unsuccessfully to grow from seeds for an entire year until I received a female adolescent. Since seeds are a hemp product, and contain less than.3% of THC, the DEA has deemed them to be a hemp-based product. This makes it easier to ship the strains from CA to NY. Clones are more space-consuming to grow because they require a mother plant if you plan on using the same source plant again and again. The decision of whether to grow plants from seed or from clones will vary depending on the farm. Some farms, be they commercial or home-grown, choose to do both. New Frontier Data’s 2023 Home Grow Report shows that 44% of respondents report using seed, 13% clone and 40% both.
