Ohio voters approved Issue 2 by a large majority on November 7. This legalizes cannabis production and sale for adults older than 21. The initiative will take effect on December 7 and legalize up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis as well as the cultivation of six plants.
State regulators must begin to approve retail licenses before September 2024. The measure includes 10% sales tax that will be used to fund municipalities with dispensaries, as well as essential services like addiction treatment, social equity programs and jobs.
Ohio will be the 24th state that regulates the adult-use cannabis market. This move brings the number of Americans who live in states with legalized cannabis up to 53%.
“Congratulations Buckeye State. Aaron Smith, CEO and Co-founder of NCIA, stated that well over half the Americans live in a State that has chosen to replace marijuana prohibition laws with laws that promote a well-regulated, responsible adult market. “Now, let’s ensure that Congress and the White House prioritize federal reform as we move into 2024.”
