Since more than 50 years, the federal Government has classified cannabis as a Schedule I Drug, which means that it is highly addictive and has no medical value.

This changed recently when the Department of Health and Human Services recommended to the Drug Enforcement Administration that cannabis be put in Schedule III. Schedule III means that it has a moderate to low potential abuse, a medical use that is currently accepted, and a minimal potential for psychological dependency.
