From Lab to Label: Safeguarding Consumers in the Cannabinoid Product Landscape

NCIA’s #IndustryEssentials is the premier digital educational series. It features a variety interactive programs that allow us to provide timely, engaging, and essential education at the time you need it.

This edition of NCIA Committee insights, originally aired June 13, featured members of NCIA’s Cannabis Manufacturing, Scientific Advisory and Hemp Committees. They joined us for a detailed discussion on the current landscape of cannabinoid labeling and testing, as well as complications that compound consumer safety and manufacturing concerns.

Cannabinoids-containing products are becoming a very popular category of consumer goods in the United States. Consumers deserve to know whether these products contain cannabinoids that are derived from hemp or cannabis.

Labeling truth is essential to provide cannabinoid information to consumers so that they can make informed purchases and ensure consumer safety. This lack of consistency in labeling can be dangerous to consumers, as there are so many differences between state-to-state for cannabinoids.

This is particularly true for cannabinoid products, which rely on third-party information during the manufacturing process and compliance testing. The interdependence of testing laboratories and manufacturers is a major factor in the label requirements. They must be attainable from a manufacturing perspective without causing undue burden to regulators and should not put public safety and health at risk.

Our panelists examined the state of America’s relatively-monitored market for cannabinoid products, including cannabinoid quantity, cannabinoid contents declarations, label claim verification, and their relationship to consumer safety.

Learning Objectives:
